After launching successfully at 2:49 a.m. EST Saturday on the company’s Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the SpaceX Crew Dragon has been orbiting Earth to arrive in position to dock with the International Space Station.

The mission, called Demo-1, is the first flight test of a space system designed for humans built and operated by a commercial company through a public-private partnership. The mission and testing continues through the docking phase, which includes many first-time events that cannot be totally modeled on the ground and, thus, are critical to understanding the design and systems ability to support crew flights. 

During the spacecraft’s approach, in-orbit demonstrations will include rendezvous activities from a distance of up to 2.5 miles (4 kilometers), known as far field, and activities within one mile (1.6 kilometers), known as near field. As the spacecraft approaches the space station, it will demonstrate its automated control and maneuvering capabilities by reversing course and backing away from the station before the final docking sequence.

In this video we look at the Binary number system. Our jumping off point is comparing and contrasting it to the Decimal number system, which is already familiar to us. This makes understanding Binary much simpler.

We then learn how to count in binary, and how counting in Binary is actually very similar to counting in decimal. 

Then we look at the details around why Binary conversions work the way they do. Form there, we look at a simple and fast way to convert from Binary to Decimal, and to convert from Decimal to Binary. 

Finally, we take tie everything back together when we look at an IPv4 address, solidifying some key lessons we learned along the way.

This is a great book by Charles Petzold that really breaks down a computer conceptually so that non-technical readers can understand how it works.

EDIT: At 00:12, the chip that is circled is not actually the CPU on this motherboard. This is an older motherboard where the CPU was first inserted into a small board and that board was then inserted into a slot on the motherboard. The chip that is circled is called the "northbridge" and helps the CPU communicate with memory. The northbridge also uses transistors and logic gates just like the CPU.
