This episode I visit the massively impressive new Pilot Cutter being built in Cornwall, UK. She is named the Pellew, and is a replica of the 68′ Falmouth Pilot Cutter Vincent, which was built in St Mawes in 1852. I have a conversation with Luke Powell, Project Manager and Chief Shipwright, about their progress since last time I visited the project 6 months ago.  We discuss the enormous mast that is currently being made, and also the challenges of managing a project of this size and scope.

32. An update on the replica Pilot Cutter Pellew

Hi, my name's Leo and I'm a boatbuilder and a sailor

and I'm on a mission to rebuild and restore

the 108-year-old classic sailing yacht Tally Ho.

and this is a new boat being built behind me,

she's a replica of a traditional English pilot cutter.

I visited the project about 6 months ago,

with a guy who's managing the project here,

and it's the chief shipwright, Luke Powell.

— It's been about 6 months since I was here last

apart from a little time sailing, I guess.

— Well, now we're back to it, it's good.

I don't know the last time I saw a mast this size was.

Probably on Adix. But it's very impressive, this timber.

— Yeah. This is 14½ inches diameter at this end,

Yeah, we went into the forest at Gunnislake,

I've been working with that forester for years,

And this tree, they've got the records for this tree,

They've got the records, every time it was dressed,

which is when you knock the branches off.

To have a good tree, you've got to take away

This tree grew 60 foot of clean stem, as it were,

— So, because of that there's very few knots?

And they're just tiny pin knots. Nothing serious.

The tree was that big, we've taken it out of a big tree.

But to get the height, the length, you need a big tree.
— Yeah.

The wood is, we've got it around the yard,

we're gonna have it sliced up, 2 inch board,

so we can use it in the furniture in the boat.

Chose the best for the mast, and the other ones —

one is gonna be chopped up for the bowsprit,

and another one was sawn up into 4-inch boards,

that we'll glue up for the boom, and the gaff,

— Because when you have a horizontal spar,

if you don't laminate it, it'll sag quite badly.

— No, no, it's all right. On a vertical spar, it's fine.

It'll shake in time, there will be shakes in it,

you just fill it with a bit of putty, or linseed oil

On the mast, there's no gravity pulling the mast

it'll end up sagging quite badly.
— Yeah.

It's the size of the mast, except it's 9" diameter.

So that needs to be laminated to give it rigidity.

Fairly short, in proportion, it's only 30 foot long.

And at that stage, they'd finished planking,

They were just working on the deck structure.

and they've put some of the bulwark planks on,
