Johnny Depp Testifies Under Cross Exam - Defamation Trial Against Amber Heard

Actor Johnny Depp is suing ex-wife Amber Heard for $50 million  for defamation in connection with Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed, in which she spoke out about being the victim of domestic violence. Heard’s article did not specifically name Depp as her alleged abuser, but according to Depp’s lawsuit, it relied “on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a domestic abuse victim and that Mr. Depp perpetrated domestic violence against her.” Amber Heard is counter-suing Depp for $100 million. 

The defamation trial began Monday in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia, with jury selection completing on the same day. Johnny Depp‘s testimony continued Wednesday as he took the stand for a second day to testify against ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he has accused of ruining his reputation and career with false accusations of domestic violence.

On Wednesday, Depp testified about the details of his relationship with Heard, claiming she used his personal weaknesses as “ammunition.”

“It seemed like pure hatred for me,” he said, claiming Heard would name-call and escalate misunderstandings into “full-scale arguments.”

When asked why Depp stayed with Heard given her alleged behaviour, he said it was “complicated.” He hypothesized the answer had to do with his own mother’s abuse against his father.

2:08:20 Depp later detailed an argument he had Heard over a post-nuptial contract in 2015 that left him with a severed middle finger.  He claims that Heard threw a liquor bottle at him, which shattered, and clipped his finger in the process. Depp also accused Heard of extinguishing a lit cigarette on his right cheek after severing his finger.

The court hearing is the latest in a very public legal battle between the divorced couple, with Heard, 35, and Depp, 58, both claiming to be victims of domestic violence. Depp filed a $50-million defamation lawsuit over a Washington Post op-ed penned by Heard in late 2018 about being a victim of domestic abuse.

As the trial continues, jurors will hear from several potential witnesses, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, actor James Franco and Marvel WandaVision star Paul Bettany.

Court proceedings are expected to last about six weeks with a jury verdict determining if Heard defamed Depp at the trial’s end.

It was December 6, 1989 - the last day of classes before midterm exams at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique. Around 4 p.m., a man entered a classroom with an assault rifle.

“He ordered the men - the students and the professors - to go on the right side of the class, and the girls on the left side,” said Adrien Cernea, one of the teachers in class at the time.

Fourteen women were shot dead in all. The gunman, Marc Lepine, then took his own life.

In 1999, the fifth estate conducted an investigation into Lepine’s life, and just what it was that led him to pick up a gun and attack complete strangers. But the gunman’s plans extended beyond women he had never met. Lepine also left behind a list of other women he’d planned to kill - many of them well-known in Quebec.

Francine Pelletier, host of the CBC’s fifth estate, was on that list. 

Pelletier delves into Lepine’s past, speaking with his aunt, friends and roommates, and discovers factors that may have led him to act as he did. Pelletier also also sits down with relatives of Lepine's victims. 

Jean-Francois Larivée lost his wife, Maryse Laganière. They’d been married only three months.

“I didn’t spend time hating him, trying to kill him in my dreams or making him pay for what he did,” Larivée told Pelletier.

“I believe that the external influence - maybe friends, his father - things happened in his life to make him very aggressive towards people, and especially women.”
