Most people are intimidated by poetry because they feel they need to understand a poem intellectually to enjoy it. But poetry is not a primarily intellectual art. It communicates to the entire human being. It addresses us simultaneously as people with intellects, emotions, imaginations, intuition, memory, and physical bodies. It addresses us in the fullness of our humanity. That being said, we can still analyze a poem if we want to. In this video I explain my personal approach on how to analyze poetry using W.B. Yeats' poem "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" as an example. 

Teaching poetry can be difficult. This video is part of my series "The Art of Poetry", a video series adapted from a class I used to teach at USC. In this video I explain how to read a poem and how to analyze a poem. I use a W.B. Yeats' poem in this example, but my techniques can be applied to analyzing any poem. The Mystery of the Strange Messages

Poem

- [Interviewer] Tell me the
story of how you and Mom met.

- Oh, honey, you've heard
that a million times.

Haven't you heard that a
million times? (laughing)

- We were doing a play at
the first One-Act Festival

of the Ensemble Studio
Theater in New York,

"Elaine Bromka, Chip
Zien, Mandy Patinkin."

And I always admired him because
he dared to be so damn bad.

- Well, we improvised the
scene for over 40-some minutes.

all the things that
people say to each other,

when they're courting
and meeting each other.

The games they play, the things
they say, the body language.

The play was like, not even
in our interest anymore.

It was sort of like courting
for six months in 45 minutes.

- We did an improv that lasted 45 minutes,

getting the first six weeks
of dating out of the way.

- And so I made a date with
her for Sunday morning brunch.

She knew that this was lunatic. (laughing)

That she was even considering talking to.

I said, "Oh, he's fabulous,
I love working with him.

What, you mean personally,
what do I think of it?

- And she calls and we
had this talk that seemed

of masochism where we swim,
women are born to suffer,

We are trained to that
hot house of exploitation.

Never do we feel more alive
when we're on our backs,

called, "In the Country of
Marriage", by Wendell Barry.

- Wendell Barry, called
"The Country of Marriage."

It was like the only book I
had in the whole apartment.

Couple plays I did, and this
one fucking book of poems.

So I said, "Well, I have this
poem I'd like to read to you."

And I read her this book called
"The Country of Marriage,"

I just read her the poem
"The Country of Marriage."

that I never could get out
of my head to this day.

"I give you my death
to set you free of me."

And then I went home and
I opened the package.

"Mandy, I love, love,
love, love, love the scarf.

Well, I've never bought
clothes for a woman.

on Washington and I think
Greenwich Street, in the Village.

- Then we made an arrangement
to meet for breakfast.

And I had to tell him how
to get to the Village,

which he literally did not how to get to.

I remember thinking,
"Oh man, he's an actor.

He's a baby, and he doesn't
even know how to get downtown.
