The Spirits of Pythian Castle

I made some errors when talking about the dating of these finds. 

The chausses are 9-11 Century found in catacombs in modern day Kyulchevka, Bulgaria. Huge thanks to Evan Schultheis at Nuanced History for the info on the chausses. Check out his channel for some great discussions on Byzantine history!

The three piece greaves from a Khazar burial in Borisov, Russia are 8th-9th Century.

Finally, the gold disk with the horsemen and splint greaves has dubious dating. It comes from the Hungarian treasure of  Treasure of Nagyszentmiklós and dates range from the 6th-10th Century.

Tag along as we tour a few stops on the 2016 Pine to Prairie Fiber Arts Studio Tour.

In this episode, we start at Fosston, Minnesota’s Northern Woolen mills, and stop at several of the artists’ studios along the way including those who create beauty with fibers, be it traditional needle-and-thread, warm wool blankets on a hand loom, or beautifully functional rattan baskets. 2017’s Pine to Prairie Fiber Arts Studio Tour happens this April 21st & 22nd.

Common Ground 811 - Fiber Arts Tour

In the summer of AD 43, the Roman emperor Claudius I ordered the invasion of Britain.

Within a few short years, Roman legions steadily advanced through what was to become the new province of Britannia, founded a colonia (a regional capital) at Colchester, and likely displaced local British populations within the landscape.

However, in AD 60–61, Boudica, queen of the Iceni tribe in East Anglia, led a fierce British revolt against Roman occupation that sent a shockwave to the emperor Nero in Rome and a message of defiance across the empire.

This online panel discussion explores the story, myth and impact of Boudica, with reference to objects from across the Museum's collection and the current exhibition Nero: the man behind the myth (until 24 October).

The speakers include British Museum Curator of British and European Iron Age collections, Julia Farley; acclaimed writer and archaeologist Sam Moorhead; and National Finds Adviser for Iron Age and Roman Coins, Andrew Brown. The discussion will be chaired by broadcaster and anthropologist Mary-Ann Ochota.

Medieval sword pommels come in a wide variety of types, but most can be boiled down to a few principle forms. Some of these pommels form a part of the hilt which encourages interaction with the grip of the hand, while others don't.
