Theater Talk presents a not-to-be-missed conversation with actor Jeff Daniels, now nominated for a Best Lead Actor in a Play TONY for his role in David Harrower's devastating drama "Blackbird," itself nominated for the TONY for Best Revival of a Play.  

In an enlightening and often funny interview, Daniels talks about working with actress Michelle Williams and director Joe Mantello to create a fresh and unique performance of the powerful drama, 8 shows a week, every week until their limited run at the Belasco Theatre ends on June 11, 2016. Daniels looks back on his early days, "fresh out of a cornfield," as an intern at Marshall W. Mason's Circle Rep Theatre, as well as his discouraging first job on Broadway as an understudy in Albert Innaurato's "Gemini." Daniels also discusses his Purple Rose Theatre in Michigan, his Emmy-winning lead in Aaron Sorkin's TV series "The Newsroom" and why he followed that role up by doing the box-office smash "Dumb and Dumber To" with Jim Carrey.

Journalists  Jesse Green, Michael Musto and Patrick Pacheco look ahead to the 2016 spring season on Broadway and the more prominent productions including “Blackbird,” “Bright Star,” “Disaster!,” “Eclipsed,” “The Humans,” “Shuffle Along,” “Tuck Everlasting,” “Waitress” and others. 

When some of the panelists (and co-hosts) are brutally unenthusiastic about several shows, Pacheco, ever the optimist of the group, responds, "You guys are snobs... and you're going to have egg on your faces.”

Theater Talk: Spring Season Preview 2016

In 1973, Merry Streep said she had a job cleaning urinals when she heard that a friend of her's from college was cast in "Bang the Drum Slowly," the first person she knew with a role in a major motion picture.

But the performance by the actor in that movie that stood out the most was someone she'd see again just two months later in Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets." After seeing the actor's performance in those movies and in "Taxi Driver," Streep said began to pursue film roles rather than just roles in theater. 

"That's the kind of actor I want to be," Streep said of De Niro. "That's what I want to do."

Just a few short years later, Streep and De Niro appeared together in "The Deer Hunter." De Niro, who's film career has spanned nearly 60 years, was honored at the University of Texas' Ransom Center's 65th anniversary celebration in September 2022 after a new endowment from the actor was announced to help pay to house his scripts, costumes and props in an exhibit at the museum in Austin, Texas.
